How to Get Injectable
Treatment Safely

Injectables are an effective and versatile way to treat signs of aging such as wrinkles, loss of volume and skin laxity. There is extensive marketing in the mainstream media and social media for neuromodulators (e.g. botox) and fillers (e.g. Juvederm). How do we know where to go and with whom to book a consultation? There are a few key points that are important to consider before getting started.

Do your research.

Get personalized recommendations to help you start your search. If you have friends or family that have had treatments in the past, that is a great way to see results first hand and get feedback before setting up an appointment. Checking reviews and searching Instagram for before and after photos is a great way to determine if you feel you may be comfortable with that provider and like their aesthetic preferences.

Make sure you feel comfortable with your provider.

It’s so important to take the time to discuss with your provider what you’re looking for, and expressing your expectations. Your provider will offer their recommendations based on their expertise, and will discuss a clear treatment plan with you. You should not feel pressured.

Cheaper isn’t better.

You may come across advertisements listing drastically lower prices than others. Be wary of this. Often counterfeit products can be used and administered by unlicensed offices. This can be very dangerous and cause complications as the products could be counterfeit or diluted. Refrain from getting injectable treatment when on vacation in other countries even if the price seems cheaper. Other countries have different regulations which can be less strict than the US. When it comes to your health and safely, it’s wise to go to a credentialed practice such as a board certified facial plastic surgeon’s office.

Commence treatment with which you feel comfortable.

During your consultation, your provider will give you their recommendations, and for some, it’s best to create a step-wise treatment plan. Your injector is there to walk you through the process, manage expectations, and discuss anticipated downtime and follow up visits. Make sure to review your medical history with your provider prior to injectable treatment as patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, are undergoing active dental treatment or have a current facial infection should not be treated.
