A brow lift can help restore a more open, rested appearance when low or heavy brows make the upper face look tired, worried, or less expressive than you feel. At A. Joshua Zimm, M.D., P.C., we approach brow and forehead rejuvenation with the same philosophy that guides all of our facial plastic surgery procedures: careful analysis, natural-looking refinement, and a plan tailored to the individual patient rather than a one-size-fits-all result.
The brow and eyelid area is one of the most delicate parts of facial aesthetics. A small change in brow height or shape can affect how the eyes appear, how the forehead balances with the rest of the face, and whether the result looks refreshed or overly lifted. During consultation, Dr. Zimm evaluates brow position, forehead height, hairline pattern, skin quality, eyelid skin, facial expression, and the patient’s goals before recommending the most appropriate approach.
For some patients, the concern is age-related descent of the brow that creates heaviness above the eyes. For others, naturally low brows or strong forehead muscles may contribute to a serious, angry, or fatigued look. Brow lift surgery is designed to elevate the brows thoughtfully, soften deep forehead or frown lines when appropriate, and bring more light back to the eyes without changing the character of the face.
The best brow lift results usually look subtle in everyday life. The goal is not to make the eyebrows noticeably high or surprised. It is to restore a better balance between the forehead, brows, eyelids, and eyes so the upper face looks more relaxed and alert.
The endoscopic approach utilizes several small incisions, telescopes, cameras and fine instruments to perform work on the forehead muscles to decrease wrinkles. The eyebrows are lifted and the scalp is secured into its new position with tiny screws or dissolvable retention clips.
The open approaches are just at, or within, the hairline for better camouflage. Forehead tissues are lifted to perform muscle work to decrease wrinkles, the forehead skin advanced the desired amount and the redundant skin removed. Incisions are closed with fine sutures and staples and a small rubber drain is placed under the skin to drain excess fluid.
As several procedures are available, depending upon the patient’s goals, hairline, age, sex, skin quality and preference for incision placement, Dr. Zimm will determine which option is best for patients to choose during the consultation.
The Forehead Lift will not remove hooding of the eyelids due to excess of crêpey eyelid skin, reduce the signs of aging in the lower face or change skin texture or quality.
An endoscopic brow lift uses several small incisions hidden within the scalp. Through these openings, specialized instruments and a small camera allow the forehead tissues and muscles to be adjusted with precision. This approach can be well-suited for selected patients seeking brow elevation with smaller incisions and minimal visible scarring.
Open brow lift techniques may place the incision at or within the hairline, allowing the forehead tissues to be lifted and adjusted while removing redundant skin when needed. For patients with a higher forehead, a hairline approach may help avoid further raising the hairline while still improving brow position. For patients with thicker hair or a lower hairline, an incision placed farther back in the scalp may be appropriate. Dr. Zimm discusses these options clearly so patients understand why one technique may fit their anatomy better than another.
Technique selection is based on more than preference alone. Hairline shape, forehead height, skin laxity, brow asymmetry, scar camouflage, and the amount of elevation needed all help guide the surgical plan.
